After the end of the Great Regional Wars in 2211, the Galteran Alliance Air Force commissioned the design of a relatively high speed interceptor fighter craft, to patrol the now peacetime skies. The commission had mandated the use of the now readily available Savadeux 550 hp Inline Engine, which had initially been developed for use in the likes of potential twin engine bombers, now cancelled following the war. A top speed of 170 mph at 5,000 feet was also required at the very least. The Vernon-Hall V.550 was eventually chosen to be field tested, after design proposals by Faircroft and Burns-Williamson, both ended in near fatal crashes. The V.550 was a Parasol Winged Monoplane fighter craft, of typical Vernon-Hall construction. It featured reinforced all metal landing gear, two synchronized front facing 8mm machine guns, and above average frontal and downward visibility. Fuel and endurance ratings were sitting quite low, as it was expected to act tactically as purely point defense interceptor, the Savadeux 550 hp engine, ended up being quite the gas guzzler. While a below average performer in the realms of a dogfight, the V.550 was capable of reaching speeds of 180 mph at 5,000 feet, a staggering speed for any combat aircraft of the time. An initial 350 V.550s were ordered for production, and were chosen to arm the homebound squadrons of the Alliance. In the following years, the V.550 would see production in several improved variants, including an improved Savadeux 605 hp engine in the V.605 model, and a carrier capable variant in the Alliance Navy's V.550CA model.
