Designed in 1940 as a medium bomber, the Wrightwing WzP-18 was a sturdy, well-rounded aircraft. It had great range, a good defensive suite, and a good payload capability (for the time). It could carry six 1,100 lbs. bombs in an internal bay, and had a total of five 0.303 machine guns. It had a crew of four; Pilot, navigator/bombardier, and two gunners. It had a relatively low top speed of barely over 200 miles per hour at 2,000 feet. It had almost no armor around the plane, making its crews especially vulnerable to attacks. Out of the 10,000 WzP-18s produced from 1940-1945, around 8,500 returned to base; of those (on average) only two out of the four crew survived to fight again. The last WzP-18 was allocated to maritime patrol duties on March 6, 1950, and has continued to serve to this day.
