His Majesty's Ship "Emden" was the second vessel of the two-ship Dresden class of German light cruisers during World War I. She is famous today for her exploits as a commerce raider in the Indian Ocean in 1914, during which she engaged in white-knuckle action like the Bombardment of Madras, where she fired upon and destroyed millions and millions of tons of British fuel oil in an Indian city, as well as the Battle of Penang, where she sank a French destroyer and a Russian cruiser. Emden's unfortunate demise came on 9 November 1914 near North Keeling Island of the Cocos Islands, where she fought and was subsequently defeated by an Australian ship, the HMAS Sydney. The wreck of the Emden remains where she last sat to this day, albeit reduced to mere heaps of scrap metal and a handful of guns on the seafloor.
