Sikorsky CH-37 Mojave
This is my first helicopter and my second aircraft this is also the second CH-37 on the SimplePlanes site. Now here’s a history lessonThe CH-37 was made by Sikorsky and first saw flight in 1953 and was introduced into the military in July of 1956 as a cargo helicopter. They were mainly used by the Army and the Marines only 154 were built for the military. This was a revolutionary helicopter for the west as it had a large carrying capacity for troops and vehicles it was also Sikorsky’s first double engined helicopter with 2 Pratt and Whitney radial engines mounted in the side pods. It held a large amount of cargo in the fuselage which could be accessed through the clamshell doors in the front of the aircraft. Later in the helicopter’s operation 4 of them were sent to Vietnam to recover lost aircraft they saved the U.S 7.5 million dollars in equipment. They also made a early warning system variant of it which is 100 times uglier. It was operated by a crew of 3 and could carry 26 soldiers or 24 stretchers. It was a step toward for the development of U.S helicopters and served its purpose until the late 60’s when it was finally retired.
