HISTORY
Indonesia's war of independence ended in 1943 and Indonesia won against Japan. Indonesia captured several Japanese warships, including the Mogami-class cruiser. At that time IR Soekarno decided not to activate the ship until 1961 when Indonesia had a strong enough economy to finance the maintenance of the ships. In 1967 the ships IJN Mikuma and IJN Suzuya were planned to be scrapped because the president wanted to reduce the economic burden on his country. In 1985 the IJN Mogami and Kumano ships were renamed KRI Sundanese and KRI Papua. In 1987 Indonesia bought some military equipment from the Soviet Union. Among them are several surface-to-air missile systems, the P-700 Granit and P-500 Bazalt. The P-700 and P-500 were purchased under the plan to modernize the Indonesian navy in 1994. In 1995 the KRI Sundanese and KRI Papua were being modernized. Her equipment is an anti-air system OSA-M, AK-630, P-700 Granite, P-500 Bazalt, as well as advanced radar so that the ships are able to face enemy ships within a range of 70 miles.
