History: Designed near the end of WWII, the Gotha "Rammjager" series was a last-ditch attempt at slowing down the Allies' rapid advances on all fronts. The Rammjager X-2 was one of those designs. It was launched either from a runway on a trolley (the X-2 Ausf. A, seen here) or as a parasite fighter (X-2 Ausf. B). The X-2 was equipped with two extremely underpowered engines only giving it a top speed of around 260 miles per hour. But, the explosives in the nose section of the aircraft would have made it a devastating weapon. Only one was ever created and sent to a squadron on its own. Said squadron was given the name of "Blitz", after the successful tactic used by Germany at the start of the war, and each aircraft bore a lightning bolt on each side of the nose. The single aircraft took off from an unknown airfield in Germany on April 1, 1945, and was tasked with intercepting a flight of American B-24 Liberators. The aircraft was too slow to reach them, and once it ran out of fuel the pilot bailed out (a ground crew member had given him a parachute just in case of an emergency). The aircraft fell to the ground and crashed somewhere in the German forests. The pilot was eventually caught and, after being interviewed, said that the plane's explosives did not detonate on impact.
