RDS-37 - the first Soviet two-stage thermonuclear bomb. Tested on November 22, 1955 at the Semipalatinsk test site by dropping from a Tu-16 bomber (It’s on a picture above). The nominal power of the bomb was approximately 3 MT, but during the test it was reduced by about half, to 1.6 MT. The explosion confirmed the possibility of overcoming the 1 MT mark, using x-rays from the fission reaction to compress lithium deuteride before synthesis ("radiation implosion").
