A COMPONENT OF THE DEFENDER AIR DEFENSE SYSTEM

(1) detaches trailer, (2) activates missile system. LandingGear raises legs, Pitch + Roll steer truck/trailer, and VTOL + Trim aim missiles.

The MIM-124 Defender is a Paternian surface-to-air missile system designed and manufactured by Paternian Defense Industries. Intended for both high- and medium-altitude air defense, the radar-guided active homing missile has since gained anti-ballistic missile capability against tactical systems such as Scud, Iskander, and ATACMS. It also has home-on-jam capabilities that allow it to engage aircraft employing active jamming. The weapon is always accompanied by an AN/MPQ-54/64 radar system, a passive phased array system which provides both detection and guidance assistance for the missile. However, the Defender, as depicted here, can engage targets via boresight mode; where the missile is fired blind and locks onto the first thing it sees.

    @Hoovy Ah.

    Canonically, the launcher is reusable.

    @Pilotmario The idea was to blow up the trailer once it was detached and the missles where used. I thought it would be a funny addition to the build.

    @GermanWarMachine It's for emergency moments against formations of enemy aircraft. Generally, batteries are not cleared to employ boresight mode if friendly aircraft are in proximity.

    Normally, the missile is guided to a target which has been detected, tracked, and identified by the AN/MPQ-54/64. This is standard operational procedure in peacetime exercises.

    However, combat tends to have everything go wrong spectacularly, and it is a possibility that the main radar would be knocked out and interceptors may be unavailable. If this is the case, then boresight mode is employed as a last-ditch defensive measure to give the battery some degree of operational capability.

    Granted, the chance it's going to hit something in boresight mode is somewhat low. However, it's at least something, which is better than having nothing.

    @Hoovy I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm certain there is some self-destruct mechanism on the site somewhere, but I'm not sure why you'd destroy your ride out?

    This was a lot of fun to use! I really enjoyed that you didn't have to actually aim. It would be great if the missle traikler had self-disctruct. so that you could drive away the n blow it up
