B-52 A Stratofortress with/ North American X-15

106k SimpleFlow  7.9 years ago

Hello everyone here it is! This is really cool its really fun to fly around with the x-15 and the b-52's engines make a really satisfying noise after about 5 minutes of flight. Or maybe im just wierd...

Controls:
VTOL: flaps
AG1: launch X-15
AG2: activates X-15 engine

Ps: sorry for the ugly b-52 cockpit

History:
The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range, subsonic, jet-poweredstrategic bomber. The B-52 was designed and built by Boeing, which has continued to provide support and upgrades. It has been operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) since the 1950s. The bomber is capable of carrying up to 70,000 pounds (32,000 kg) of weapons, and has a typical combat range of more than 8,800 miles (14,080 km) without aerial refueling.
Beginning with the successful contract bid in June 1946, the B-52 design evolved from a straight wing aircraft powered by six turboprop engines to the final prototype YB-52 with eight turbojet engines and swept wings. The B-52 took its maiden flight in April 1952. Built to carry nuclear weapons for Cold War-era deterrence missions, the B-52 Stratofortress replaced the Convair B-36. A veteran of several wars, the B-52 has dropped only conventional munitions in combat.

The North American X-15 was a hypersonic rocket-powered aircraftoperated by the United States Air Force and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as part of the X-plane series of experimental aircraft. The X-15 set speed and altitude records in the 1960s, reaching the edge of outer space and returning with valuable data used in aircraft and spacecraft design. The X-15's official world record for the highest speed ever recorded by a manned, powered aircraft, set in October 1967 when William J. "Pete" Knight flew Mach 6.72 at 102,100 feet (31,120 m), a speed of 4,520 miles per hour (7,274 km/h) which has remained unchallenged as of January 2017
During the X-15 program, 13 flights by eight pilots met the Air Force spaceflight criterion by exceeding the altitude of 50 miles (80 km), thus qualifying these pilots as being astronauts. The Air Force pilots qualified for astronaut wings immediately, while the civilian pilots were eventually awarded NASA astronaut wings in 2005, 35 years after the last X-15 flight. The only Navy pilot in the X-15 program never took the aircraft above the requisite 50 mile altitude and so as a result, never earned himself astronaut wings.

@KDS for what it's worth, B-52s did launch drones...some were equipped to launch D-21 recon drones.

And this is a gorgeous build! I've been fortunate to see the real NB-52 that launched the X-15s, nicknamed "Balls 8" because of its serial number. :) It's on display at Edwards AFB here in California.

@KDS the X-15 wasn't a drone, it was an experimental rocket-powered manned aircraft. It paved the way for a lot of new technology used in space flight, including the Space Shuttle program.
