This was Republics design for the US Army Air Corps' R-40C requirement this was issued to both engine and aircraft manufacturers, Republics original design the AP-12 only placed 13th in R-40C entries so Republic designed another the AP-18, which won the contract and was then re-designated the XP-69, a windtunnel model was made and a full-mockup was created but problems with it's Wright R-2160 Tornado engine caused development to slow and eventually it got cancelled
