Heinkel HE 162 Volksjäger
WIKI
The He 162 It was nicknamed "Volksjäger" (people's fighter), and was part of a joint program of the Luftwaffe and the Nazi Party, which aimed to have a cheap, simple, easy-to-build fighter that was propelled by only one jet turbine, that all aiming to face the allied piston fighters and also aiming to save resources and raw materials.
The He 162 had a unique design, with its wing tips facing downwards and its jet engine mounted on the fuselage. The engine was placed well above the fuselage to facilitate the intake of air and the exit of gases resulting from combustion, but this change made it difficult to see at 6 o'clock.
It was equipped with an ejection seat for a possible abandonment of the aircraft during the flight, since the traditional method could cause the pilot to be sucked into the aircraft's engine due to the fact that it is located right behind the cockpit.
It competed directly against Blohm & Voss, Arado, Focke-Wulf and Heinkel who also submitted proposals to produce the Volksjäger. The winner was Blohm & Voss, which was a better project and had some advantages over the Heinkel project, including the fact that the plane had a flight range of 20 minutes at sea level, when required by Jägerstab, Fighter Staff, was 30 minutes. The projects were reassessed on September 19, leaving Heinkel as a second alternative.
After a new meeting on September 23, Heinkel's project was chosen as the winner because the plane had already been built, as Heinkel was already working on an aircraft with jet engines, having only to make adjustments, while the competitor Blohm & Voss he would have to start his project from scratch.
Some people, like General Adolf Galland, positioned themselves against the project, with the argument that they should concentrate the effort on aircraft that already had their prototype approved and on the assembly line, such as the Messerschmitt Me 262.
