Flyfabrikken P-18a Havsvale (Maritime Patrol Aircraft Challenge)
Ok, so this is an entry to the Maritime Patrol Aircraft Challenge.
The fictional Flyfabrikken P-18a Havsvale
The Havsvale is a seabird (Storm Petrel in English, I believe).
Origins: It is 1965 and The Royal Norwegian Airforce is desirous of replacing her two squadrons of 1940 vintage JA-3c Hvalrus MP/ASW Patrol Bombers.
To this end the Kjeller Flyfabrikken is tasked with producing an upgraded and modernised Hvalrus, utilising modern technology such as FADEC equipped turboprop engines, radar guided anti ship missiles, magnetic anomaly detection, active / passive radar and sonar detection and ir/low light and optical search systems along with the computerised systems required to asimilate and present tactical data to the flight crew.
As a full member of NATO in close procimity to the USSR, Norway was not short of offers for expertise, design, equipment and even complete aircraft from other members.
The design was finalised quickly, utilising the fuselage centre section and slightly modifying the tail section of the existing JA-3c design, to create a midwing, tricycle landing gear twin prop aircraft of pleasing proportions (noted are similarities in form to the Dh Mosquito anf Grumman Tigercat).
The Prototype flew in early 1968 and performed well, with excellent stall and climb characteristics and also reaching speeds in excess of 350mph. This performance would however be blunted considerably once operational gear and fuel was added to the airframe.
The first airframes were taken on by the RnoAF for operations from Bodø airbase innApril 1970.
Specifications:
Armament: Capable of carrying an extensive range of ASW/Anti Ship guided mulitions, dumb fire torpedos and iron bombs.
In this configuration she carries;
2x Kongsberg Defens ASM-1 Sverdfisk Radar Guided missiles
3x Mk.13 dumb fire air drop torpedos
6x Kongberg Defens M-12 air drop bouys (equipped with optical scanning, marker lights and 250lb explasove charge - these bouys can detect, illuminate and track and even attack surface and shallow submerged vessels! I highly recommend trying to skip bomb with them. Its fun!)
1x Kongberg Defens T-1a Targeting pod (used to assist with targeting the ASMs)
2x 350 gallon drop tanks. (Note the stbd tank is slightly under filled to balance out the extra weight of the brace of Mk.13 torpedos.
Role: Maritime Patrol / ASW / Maritime Strike
To deploy the ASMs, select the Infernos, lock on and launch as normal.
To deploy the bouys, open the bomb bay, select the boom 25 and drop as if you were bombing. Note that these can actually be dropped as bombs, should the need arise. Use AG5 to turn on the avtive tracking (nothing more than blinking lights, but it looks cool).
Controls:
AG1 - Unlock nose wheel (steers on the rudder) and turn on landing lights
AG2 - Activate weapons bay door (toggle open / closed with GEAR command)
AG3 - Turn on nav / formation lights
AG4 - ditch drop tanks
AG5 - activate marker bouy systems (drop bouys with bomb drop command. This has a side effect of making the bouys explosive.)
AG6 - Ditch ASMs
AG7- Activate landing gear (toggle up / down with GEAR command)
AG8 is unused.
Trim - adjust trim pitch
Vtol up - flaps
Camera 1-6 optical tracking for the bouys
Camera 7 is the pilot (note the nice mfds and the hud).
For take off: 1/2 flap, trim 1/2 nose up, AG-1 on (she likes to wander on the t/o roll) she will come unstuck at approx 130mph. Do not try to force her nose up, as she is almost 38 tons of aeroplane. Get her gear up ASAP. Let her gain speed, retract flaps at approx 150 mph, you are now flying!
Landing: full flap. AG2 and AG1 active. If fully loaded, keep her at approx 150mph on the glide path. If all stores are gone, 140mph is sufficient. One must fly her onto the ground. Stall comes at around 120 mph and it is not gentle. Flare at the last moment to avoid prop / runway inferface. Brake like the blazes.
One thing That I highly recommend is that you need to adjust the props to 3x thickness in the editor and remove 2000 lbs from the two compartments between the nose cone and the canopy. She will fly so much better for it.
Good hunting, chaps!

Nice, tail reminds me of the mossie!
@mikoyanster
Many thanks for the spot!
Nah, I think I’ll let her be. If you want to make the prop alteration before you test her then great! But if not, no big deal. Her take off performance is marginal, due to her being over her safe take off weight, you see, but her flight performance is ok-ish, once you drop tanks and start using ordinance. I have two more entries in the works, too! Great challenge. @Dimkal
Aircraft is within regulations. Is this ur final design or u will upload another one with minor fixes?
