MIXED SIGNALS: INDEPENDENT AIR FLIGHT 1851

Lets start off with the pilots and passengers, mkay? The Captain was Douglas Leon Daurghtey, age 41. He had 7,766 flight hours under his belt. 766 of those on the 707. The F/O was Samuel “Sammy” Adcock. He was 36. He was less experienced than the captain, as he had 3,764 flight hours with 64 on the 707. The F/E was Jorge Gonzalez, aged 34. He had 6,756. He was the most experienced on the 707 with 1,056 flight hours on the type. About 4,000 of his flight hours were on both the B727 and C-5 Galaxy. There were 137 passengers onboard Flight 1851.

THE CRASH:

As Independent Air Flight 1851 was on approach to Santa Maria, there were many misunderstandings due to the language barrier. The ATC controlling Flight 1851 made a major error. The ATC said 1027hPa, when it was actually 1018.7. At 2:02, (14:02) passing 5,000ft, Flight 1851 experienced some light turbulence. And just minutes later, at 2:08:12, or 14:08:12, at an altitude of 1,795 feet, disaster struck as Flight 1851 slammed into the top of a mountain near a road. Tragically, all 144 people onboard perished. The disaster was the worst in Portuguese history. The Investigation will be in a later forum post.
