AF 246 Rooi Kat

37 SlopeSlayer910  3.0 years ago

The Rooi Kat was originally planned as a VTOL capable missile armed intercepter class fighter. This changed when after the first mock up was built the designers noticed that the high cantilever wings allowed the unusual possibility of having wing mounted cannons with the ammo pool inside the fuselage. This gave the intercepter the capability to be modified to a fighter configuration. The Navy and Airforce were interested with the plane but requested that arial refuelling capability be added for long range missions. With the new capability for longer range missions it became viable that the aircraft’s missiles would be replaced with bombs during a possible ground attack mission. This prompted the designer to add a ground attack weapon so that the plane could attack medium targets and still have the capability to protect itself with missiles, thus the 152mm howitzer. This meant that according to the armed forces designation and naming system the plane would be known as the AF 246 Rooi Kat.
