This was Hughes' prototype aircraft for the US armies Super Fighter program, the D-3 used the same engine layout and design as the XF-11 (which crashed), though this time it was a bit more successful and flew with little problem, if the super fighter program was actually completed this aircraft would have likely been chosen as the US armies new main fighter
