ATX-183 Salamander (REAL TRACK)

210 StarfallEngineering  4.2 years ago

Here's my fictional tank destroyer inspired by German «waffentragers».

About it

It is an experimental anti-tank vehicle carrying 183 mm gun. Its most notable features are real tracks, and tweaking them to increase their stability was a significant part of developing this craft. As a result its maximum speed is over 20 km/h. The main gun is capable of shooting 60 HE rounds, and reloading takes 10 seconds («ready to fire» indicator included). You may say that it's too overpowered, but I think this vehicle should have its advantages as a compensation for relatively low speed and stability to be worth using in combat. In addition to the main armament, ATX-183 is also equipped with a machine gun.

Controls

Throttle: engine activation
Roll: turret turning
Pitch: gun elevation
Yaw: steering
Trim: right track control
VTOL: left track control
AG8: machine gun on/off

How to drive it

It has been tested mostly at Low Physics, but it should remain stable at any other settings.
Because it's possible to control the tracks differentially, you can choose one of two driving styles.

First:

You can set Trim and VTOL to maximum and control forward moving with Throttle and steering with Yaw. Note: it's not recommended to use Yaw for too long, otherwise it may cause unpredictable consequences (basically the vehicle ends up in a violent explosion because the tracks are gone). For long-time steering you should decrease Trim or VTOL.

Second:

You can set Throttle to 100% and use Trim and VTOL to control the tracks separately. Preferable when moving on inclined surfaces.
