Curtiss XF15C-1 Stingray
Hey y'all! I'm back once again with the Curtiss XF15C-1, an unknown and underrated aircraft. Shortly before the end of the second world war, the USN wanted a carrier aircraft that had a jet and a propeller engine to allow for higher speeds and greater performance in the field. The two main competitors were this aircraft and the Ryan FR-1 (which I will make at a later date). Of course, historically the FR-1 won the competition, and the XF15C wasn't even produced much before the end. Only 3 were built for experimental purposes and then it was scrapped, except for one remaining that is in Hickory North Carolina. Although, this aircraft was canceled before it went anywhere, and almost no one knows it, and so I have built it for the Never Built Challenge. So, here is the description of this beauty.
I made this aircraft previously (CLICK ME), as did mon ami, PapaKernels (CLICK ME). Keeping with tradition, I am doing the same screenshot with this, for the memes. Besides PK's and I's, there is only one other on this site as far as I remember, and arguably, this is by far the best one.
Introduction
In 1944, the United States Navy ordered requirements for an aircraft powered with the speed of jets, and reliability of propeller-driven aircraft. 3 of these aircraft were ordered to be built for experimental test purposes, but one was scrapped, one crashed, and one survives as a relic in a museum. In theory, it was supposed to be able to exceed 500 miles per hour, the fastest naval aircraft to that point, but in reality it struggled to outpace most fighters of the time, such as the Corsair. The jet was bulky and unreliable, being an Allis-Chalmers J36 turbojet. The radial engine, on the other hand, was a beauty of the time, being a PW Double Wasp, a well-liked engine by naval aviators.
It was given four 20mm autocannons and was allegedly going to be capable of carrying bombs or other weapons, but I omitted them as I tried making this look like the experimental one.

The first model that crashed because the low horizontal stabilizer caused it to down pitch
Blueprint I used
Controls
- Normal Flight Controls
- AG 3 is for Arresting Hook
- AG 6 is for the Wing Mechanism
- VTOL Down for Flaps (I suggest not using them...)
Anyways, as always, huge thanks to PapaKernels for flight test help, feedback, and digging into my laziness. I hope y'all enjoy! Next up is a fighter jet for the fighter mafia...

@TheSonOfThunder sorry i'm late
- Originality:
10/10
(concept was almost never heard of, and only 1 other of this plane exists on the site)- Looks:
14/15
(smooth, with fuselage parts. Accuracy is obviously perfect. And I like how you put all the labels on the plane, even though you didn't need to; it shows how you strive for maximum accuracy)- Performance:
13/15
(no problems with the flying, except that the flaps cause the plane to crash)- Features:
5/5
(the wings fold, and it has armament)- Overall:
42/45
(we have a potential winner!)Approved
This has the most detailed description so far! (though it won’t influence marks)
@dabestsock Thank you, partner!
Nice
@IrandomAnswer really!? That's so freaking cool!! I've always wanted to see it and the FR-1 Fireball. If I ever could, I want to help restore the XP-81 too... I dunno, these are all just gorgeous aircraft imo 😂
I've actually seen this exact aircraft before, on display at the Hickory Aviation Museum in North Carolina.
@RepublicOfCursedPlanes hey no worries man!! Thank you so so much!! I'm glad you like her!
bonus 1
bonus 2 (very cursed)
@RepublicOfCursedPlanes sorry about the tag! I thought I woouldn't be able to make it a successor, but lo and behold, it in fact is!
@MrSilverWolf crap. Alright, sorry mate
@TheSonOfThunder I don’t know how to do that
@MrSilverWolf could you pretty please make this a successor to RepublicOfCursedPlanes' Never Built Challenge? Thank you so so much, I am sorry to bother
.
Code: 3xjkX6
@RepublicOfCursedPlanes sweet!! Thanks much dude!
@TheSonOfThunder ofc!
@PapaKernels thank you so so much bro!!
This thing is fun to get screenshots for. Shes so photogenic. Love this thing so much brother. Definitely one of your best builds!
@RepublicOfCursedPlanes
This is my submission to your challenge, I will work on making it a successor
.
Also, it has a wingspan of ~45-ish feet, the X was increased in size which makes the borders do weird stuff lol
