The Republic aviation P-47D thunderbolt was an American heavy fighter/bomber escort first introduced into service in 1941 but would not earn that much of a reputation until 1944-‘45 whilst escorting B-17s and bombing ground units over Germany and parts of occupied Western Europe where it earned a reputation as a nearly indestructible tank destroying aircraft, capable of carrying the equivalent of half the bomb load of a HE-111 bomber and 8 .50 caliber MGs, the roar of it’s radial engine would certainly be a morale raiser for allied troops.
