Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a WW2 firghter aircraft. Developed for the United States Army Air Corps the P-38 had distinct twin booms and a single, central cockpit. Nicknamed the "fork-tailed devil" by German Luftwaffe, and "two planes, one pilot" by the Japanese. The P-38 took on many different roles but was extensively used as a long range escort.
