The Messerschmitt BF-109 started when the Reichsluftministerium (RLM) issued a requirment for a new monoplane fighter in 1933, and long story short, Messerschmitt won and the ME BF-109 would (according to winair.ca) would become the most produced single seat fighter aircraft ever and 3rd most produced aircaft ever with about 34,852 aircraft produced from 1936-1958 (the BF-109 made after the war were made by Czechoslovakia as the avia s-99 and the avia s-199)
