The Airbus A340 is a wide-body, four-engine Airbus passenger aircraft. The main use of this aircraft is to transport large numbers of passengers over long distances. Construction of the Airbus A340 began in 1987 and first flew on October 25, 1991. The aircraft was designed and built at the same time as the Airbus A330. The A340 is offered in three models: 300, 500 and 600. The 300 is designed for routes of more than 7400 nautical miles (13700 km), which meets all the needs of 300 passengers for these trips. The 500, the longest-range model, is capable of carrying more than 313 passengers in three classes for routes of more than 9,000 nautical miles (16,700 km). Singapore Airlines uses this model for the Singapore-Los Angeles route, which takes more than 19 hours. This model also uses Rolls-Royce engines. The 600, the longest model of the 340, is capable of carrying 360 passengers in 3 classes or 419 passengers in 2 classes for routes over 7900 nautical miles. This model, like the 500 model, uses Rolls-Royce Trent 500 engines.(Aseman Airlines is the oldest user of this aircraft in the world)
