F-5E Tiger II (TUDM)
The F-5E is a single seat, twin turbine jet engine made in the United States. The F-5E itself was an extensively updated versions of the F-5A Freedom Fighter. WIKIPEDIA SOURCE
The F-5E Tiger II became the first supersonic aircraft used by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) and began service in 1975 with the delivery of 14 F-5E aircraft and 2 F-5B aircraft (the 2-seat version of the F-5A aircraft equipped with an oil tank at the end of the wing). The F-5B aircraft was then transferred to the Royal Thai Air Force in 1982 when the RMAF received 4 F-5F aircraft. This aircraft replaced the F-86 Avon Saber aircraft that served since 1969 in the air defense role (the result of the contribution of the Royal Australian Air Force ).
Despite its role as an air superiority aircraft, the F-5E can also be used to conduct Close Air Support (CAS) operations. In the 80s, 7 F-5E aircraft and 2 F-5F aircraft were assigned with 12 "Kala" Squadron RMAF at RMAF Butterworth. The remaining aircraft are operated by RMAF's 11 "Ular Tedung" Squadron. In addition to the role of air defense, the F-5E aircraft was also used in the role of ground attack to assist the Malaysian Army especially during the [Communist Rebellion in the 1970s and 1980s. Several aircraft have been purchased as replacements for aircraft that have crashed and as many as two F-5Es (M29-21 & M29-22) and one F (M29-23 is believed to be a leased aircraft to the RMAF) new versions (shark nose and wide lerx inlet edge) capable of using TACAN guidance and VHF communication systems entered RMAF service during the mid-80s.
The role of the F-5E received less attention with the adoption of MiG-29N aircraft by the RMAF to take over the air defense role. The RMAF looked to upgrade the F-5E Tiger II aircraft in its inventory, but could not find an upgrade package that suited its needs. Among the modernization seen is the ability to handle weapons such as the Hughes AGM-65 Maverick and the Matra R.550. The RMAF is also looking at providing a laser marker to enable the launch of Precision Guided Munitions (PGM). However, no modernization was carried out on the RMAF F-5 aircraft until the end of its service.
