Jet engines saw use very early in the war. One of Germany's best examples at the time was the 272. During 1941 it was considered the worst nightmare of Allied pilots being capable of taking down entire wings of fighters on its own. Being smaller than other fighters at its time made it cheaper to produce as well. This fear was short lived when the allies realized that it was a very short range fighter only capable of flying over the english channel, fighting for 30 minutes, then returning home.
