Experimental VTOL configuration, gyro stabilized, with a little practice can be flown from Wright Airfield to nearby island and landed, with fuel for a return trip. Use “pusher” jut turbine (uses Trim instead of Trottle. Throttle controls VTOL lift. I do not recommend changing orientation of VTOL thrusters, since there is no other means of lift). This does make for good practice landing a VTOL.
