Sd.Kfz 234/5-1 ausf. 21 cm Nebelwerfer 42
Similar to the last four variants of the Sd.Kfz 234, the 234/5-1 carries a small, two man turret fitted with a 2 cm KwK 38 gun to combat softer targets, and two rail mounted 21 cm rockets from the Nebelwerfer 42 for use against solid targets.
The primary differance of this version from others, aside from the 21 cm rockets and Schürzen, was it's amphibious capabilities.
Two propellers mounted at the rear powered by the air-cooled Tatra 103 diesel engine propelled the armored car forward in the water.
The creation of this amphibious armored car was the need for a landing craft support vehicle and beach head infantry support for the incoming naval invasion of the British-held Gibraltar Strait, and a possible naval invasion of the United States.
Roughly around 200 of the Sd.Kfz 234/1 and 234/2 were converted into the 234/5-1 variant, and saw use across North America and North Africa.
The 234/5-1 rarely saw use outside of patrols along the Atlantic wall, with the few exceptions of use being the naval invasions of Gibralter and the Eastern coast of the US. The reason for the lack of use was due to the overly complex nature of the entire craft after the conversion, and the frequent breakdowns it had because of the complexity.
