Something I am working on with Manboy2. Make sure to check him out. It is capable of a finniky VTOL. First, VTOL to max, then activate 2. Put throttle up to max and wait until liftoff. Once it begins to tilt backwards, slowly bring the VTOL down. You will need to make adjustments to it until you have begun flying. Once it is flying, whether through VTOL or runway, (this will also help it take off) put the VTOL just above center. Always have group 2 active. Enjoy and make sure you give Manboy2 a look.
