History
2317 served notoriously in The Vietnam War providing air support for amphibious invasions with its formidable armament, though restricted with its weapons payload it sure packed a punch.
Harvey Baker was in the Pilots seat when she was first deployed with James Baker as his co-pilot, Sally Jones as his Radio op, Carl Junger as the left weapons operator and due to crew shortages the navigator, Harry Smith, doubled as the left weapons operator. Flying from the carrier USS AMERICA good ol’ “Bakers Beatuy” took off on a perilous mission. 12 marines called in an air evac cause they were under fire and had 4 casualties on stretchers. Harvey didn’t want to tell the men they couldn’t take the stretchers so ordered a winch be fitted.
Flying into the drop zone all but 6 of the marines came out, 2 were attaching the 4 stretchers to the winch. It didn’t look good, the crafts aft engine was hit by a cannon round and was failing but James didn’t call off the evac but the soldiers were gunned down and Junger himself pulled the craft out of the DZ. Flying back to the carrier MIG21s were attacking the helicopter but 12 miles away from the carrier beaten up and destroyed they thought no hope was left but luckily 3 F4 Phantoms turned up and allowed a forced water landing sending a ship to collect them.
All men aboard were given indefinite leave and retired on wound pay.
