PAC P1B Eagle -Armed

25.2k JohnnyBoythePilot  7.3 years ago

This is the armed version of the P1B Eagle which has the option between 2 Vickers machine guns or 2 M2 Browning machinge guns. The naval variant can also carry 1 torpedo underneath its fuselage. The P1B was produced as a fighter from 1921 to 1930. After 1930 it was still produced but only for civilian and trainer applications.

The P1B Eagle was the second improved version of the original P1A. The biggest difference with the B model was that is replaced the NP-1 V4 Piston engine with the NR-2, 5-piston, 150-200HP (350HP in S.P.) radial engine. The P1B however kept the old fixed-pitch wooden prop from the P1A. Other improvements of the P1B over the P1A was improved flight controls, more streamlined and slightly wider fuselage, better gun sights (military variant), and it features a better, bigger cargo hold, and a more reliable pull-starter for the engine. The P1B was produced for the military and for civilian use. It featured a small cargo hold between the bottom wingset in front of the cockpit that could also be taken out and be replaced by an extra seat or a fuel tank to increase the P1B's already long range. The P1B tops out at 156 knots (aprox. 180 mph) and was pretty fast for it's time. The P1B first flew in 1920 and was produced from 1921 to 1965 counting ALL P1B's (military and civilian variants of the P1B). The B model was also the most produced P1 model.

The P1 Eagle is also comparable to the Piper J-3 Cub, Aeronca Champ and Chief, Luscombe Silvair, ERCO Ercoupe, and the Taylorcraft.

Also since this is a 1920's bi-plane, there was no tailwheel, only a tailskid, so this plane is unsteerable on the ground.
