At 72 parts, my second flag with a Union Jack is now complete! This is the flag of the massive nation of Australia! Australia is one of the ten biggest nations in the world today. Coming in at 2.79 million square miles (7.69 million square kilometers), Australia is 3/4 the size of all of Europe, which makes Australia the 6th largest country in total area, ahead of India, but behind Brazil. Despite their size, Australia has a smaller population than North Korea and Nepal. The population of Australia is around 24.6 million, and with a population density of only 3 people per square kilometer, either Australia's at fault, or nature is, right? One of the main reasons Australia is so sparsely populated is due to 35% of Australia's land, which is around 976.5k square miles, or about 2.52 million square kilometers, receiving so little rainfall, that they are essentially desert. The flag of Australia is a style that is not common among members of the Commonwealth of Nations, a group of mostly former British Empire territories. The style of a Union Jack in the upper left corner is utilized by only 4 of the 54 members, including Australia. In Australia’s flag, the Union Jack represents their history as a British settlement. The other 4 who utilize this style are Tuvalu, Fiji, and New Zealand. Anyways, on the flag, the large star below the Union Jack, more known as the Commonwealth Star since it represents the nation of Australia, has 6 points representing the 6 states of Australia, and a 7th point for their territories. Next to the Union Jack and Commonwealth Star is the constellation Crux, also known as the Southern Cross. The constellation’s appearance is a reminder of Australia’s rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait heritage. Finally, the colors of the flag of Australia. The red symbolizes hardiness and bravery, the white represents peace and honesty, and the blue represents vigilance, truth, and justice.
