About
Production
The P-335 was designed in late 1942 in response to rumors about a German heavy fighter,
The aim was to produce a fighter that outperformed and outgunned all existing fighter aircraft, and that had an auxiliary ground attack capability. Performance of the prototype and initial production aircraft surpassed expectations; the P-335 was the fastest piston-engine fighter, with a top speed capable of breaking the sound barrier. The P-335 was to be heavily-armed — two 37 mm cannon and thirty-two 50 caliber machine guns, as well as underwing hardpoints for bombs and torpedoes. This speed and firepower was bought at the cost of heavy weight and a high landing speed. The P-335 made its first flight in 1943 and was introduced in late 1944 with the name “ Quarrel” on account of its high speed and power.
