Quelques explications historiques à propos du « Komet rouge » .
Au début du mois de mai 1944, l’Ekdo-16 fut déclaré opérationnel et le premier engagement avec l’aviation alliée se produisit le 13 mai. Le Major Späte, décolla de Bad Zwischenahn avec le 163B V-41 (PK+QL).Il se lança à la poursuite de deux Republic P-47 « Thuderbolt », volant non loin de son terrain. Alors qu’il se plaçait en position d’attaque, son moteur s’éteignit et il dut dégager. Heureusement pour
lui, les P-47 ne se doutèrent de rien ! Späte dut attendre 2 ou 3 minutes avant de pouvoir rallumer sa fusée. Pendant ce temps, il rongeait son frein en voyant les déjà éloignés de plus de 5000 mètres.Lorsqu’il ralluma sa fusée, le Me 163 fit un bond et rattrapa vite les Américains. Soudain, un P-47 tout entier remplissait son viseur . Il s’apprêtait à lâcher une rafale de ses deux canons de 30 mm lorsque l’aile gauche s’affaissa violemment. Concentré sur sa proie, Späte avait négligé de surveiller son indicateur de vitesse et il franchit le seuil de compressibilité. Après avoir récupéré le contrôle de son appareil, il ne lui restait plus assez de carburant pour tenter une nouvelle interception.
Très frustré, Späte brûla le reste de ses propergols en revenant à sa base.
Les P-47, qui n’avaient rien soupçonné, continuaient tranquillement leur route !
Le prototype opérationnel V-41 avec lequel cette interception s’était déroulée, possédait une caractéristique de taille : ce fut le seul « Komet » entièrement peint en rouge. Il semble qu’aucun ordre ne fut donné pour appliquer cette couleur. De jeunes mécaniciens de l’Ekdo-16 furent à l’origine de cette initiative.
Ils expliquèrent que cette couleur reflétait l’état d’esprit de leur unité. Pour eux, le rouge serait un gage de chance lors de la première interception effectuée par ce chasseur révolutionnaire. En effet, il portait ainsi la même couleur que le fameux Fokker du Baron Rouge, l’As Manfred Von Richthofen de la Première Guerre Mondiale. Quelque temps après cette interception, il reçut une livrée camouflée classique. Au décollage , larguer le chariot de roues impérativement avant 250 mph . donnez moi vitre avis .
