Three years prior to the Diacan preemptive strike, the Dan Salvadorian air force were experimenting with the feasibility of using an airborne laser for anti missile defense.

Two of the older A-340-200 AWS (fictional AWACS variant ordered by Dan Salvador) were selected to be the test beds for the Airborne Laser program, And were re designated as PT-MZ46AL (PT - Prototype Test) and CT-MZ47AL (CT - Combat Test). The PT variant had the main radar removed from the airframe, while the second prototype retained it.

The Diacan preemptive strike would force both test aircraft into combat, the range of the laser proving effective in downing medium range missiles. When the Diacan forces ran out of missiles, the radarless prototype was grounded for refurbishing.

The Combat Test (now numbered AL-02) was put in the forefront of combat. The aircraft served primarily as an AWACS more than an Airborne Laser near the tail end of the war, but had participated in major battles over the western border of Dan Salvador.

The laser though, would come to use during a battle involving the Literature Club Special Unit when the A340-200 AL utilized its laser to shoot down the SAM that was launched at the squadron leader. Since then the Airborne laser was hailed as the "Lightguard" since it guards allied aircraft from missiles with Light.

AWACS Lightguard continued to serve the DSAF to this day, even after the disbanding of the "Literature Club"
