The A-4B Skyhawk is an upgraded variant of the A-4A Skyhawk, developed by Douglas Aircraft in the 1950s as a compact, lightweight, and highly maneuverable carrier-based subsonic fighter-bomber. The A-4B retained the innovative delta wing design without flaps and the simplicity that defined its predecessor but featured several enhancements for improved combat performance and operational flexibility.Powered by a Wright J65-W-16A turbojet engine, the A-4B could reach a top speed of 673 mph (1,083 km/h). It was capable of carrying up to 10,000 lbs (4,536 kg) of ordnance, including bombs, rockets, and missiles, across five external hardpoints. The aircraft was equipped with two fixed Colt Mk 12 20mm cannons, offering formidable firepower.Notable improvements in the A-4B included upgraded avionics, additional hardpoints, and increased fuel capacity, enabling extended range and mission endurance. This made the A-4B a versatile platform for a variety of missions, from attack operations to close air support. It was widely used during the Vietnam War, where it demonstrated exceptional reliability and effectiveness in combat. The A-4B became a symbol of U.S. naval aviation, earning a reputation for its durability and ease of maintenance.
