Ilyushinil IL98
The Ilyushin Il-98 is an improvement concept of the existing Il-96 series by the Ilyushin Design Bureau. It aims to design a long-range wide-body passenger aircraft using a twin-engine configuration.
Feature introduction:
1. Design background:
The Il-98 was an improvement based on the four-engine Il-96-300 model, with the goal of reducing operating costs and improving fuel efficiency in line with the current trend of twin-engine passenger aircraft (such as the Boeing 767 and Airbus A310).
2. Engine:
It uses two high-efficiency, high-thrust turbofan engines (such as the pw4000 series) installed under the wings.
3. Capacity and range:
• Seat capacity: approximately 250-300 passengers
• Range: approximately 8,000-10,000 kilometers, suitable for medium and long-haul routes.
4. Economical:
The dual-engine design significantly reduces fuel consumption and maintenance costs, making it more economically competitive.
5. Unfulfilled plans:
Due to changes in market demand and the strong market dominance of competitors (such as Boeing 777 and Airbus A330), as well as economic difficulties after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Il-98 program failed to develop further and ultimately stayed in the design stage.
The concept represented Ilyushin's attempt at modernizing wide-body passenger aircraft, but it failed to achieve mass production.
