Canadair CR-1 Antelope

2,841 MajGenBlackbird  2.7 years ago

The Canadair CR-1 Antelope was an AEW and tactical recon aircraft developed by Canadair. The basis of the design is the single engine CA-1 Gopher. The strong airframe allowed the addition of heavy radar equipment in nose and an interesting tail fairing. The tail unit was made up of a vertical stabilizer cut to only 2 feet tall, slapping on a fairing for the installation of radar and countermeasures. The horizontal stabilizers were attatched to this fairing, and had twin vertical stabilizers on each end. This provided a very stable platform while also reducing the overall height of the aircraft. The new airframe was powered by two Rolls Royce Turboprop engines, each outputting 5000 hp. Only 100 were produced, all serving with the RCAF.
