P-51 Mustang Ol' Reliable

18.1k StockPlanesRemastered  4 months ago

Prologue:
Fuselage came from North American P-51XR Mustang Race 38 "Precious Metal" by HuskyDynamics01
The build itself is inspired by Ol' Reliable by PhilipTarpley
Story was inspired by The Sandburg Tsunami a not-a-variant of the P-51, in which the Ol' Reliable closely resembles.

Lore:
what happens when a modern military aircraft design firm gets ahold of a vintage fighter plane and decides to go to Reno? A state of the art racing plane of course! A group of designers thought the best way to accomplish this task (Funded by the company itself and totally not funded by the tax payers of the Simplese islands) was the good ol' Griffon engine driving contrarotating props. However, seeing as many a time before, this has resulted in structural failure in the tail, they decided on a new approach. by picking up the tail out of the prop wash, they hoped to reduce vibration in the transonic regime, (the speeds at which air racers were approaching at the time) thus lessening fatigue on the tail. however, this worked so well that a new set of tailplanes had to be added to allow for extra trim control. the added flight surfaces had the interesting effect of allowing for tighter turns, and the team considered for a short time, taking there creation to Red Bull, but the series shut down do to an international pandemic before they could test this out. sadly.

epilogue:
The story is inspired by Tsunami, and what would have happened had they put the tail of an F-104 on it. Tsunami was NOT a P-51, as it was built from the ground upusing more modern building techniques. it featured a Rolls royce Griffon and the radiator configuration of a P-51, but other than that it was completely new. it was designed and built by a group of designers at Lockheed Martin, to race at Reno in the unlimited class. Unfortunately, like many other X-class racers it suffered a catastrophic failure in the tail, resulting in disintegration. Ol' Reliable by Philip Tarpley closely resembles Tsunami, but does appear to have an F-104 tail, but retains the original H-stab for trim, making it a very tight turning racer, and very fast.
