Maverick Fighter

"My main complaint was the lack of power the Renegade's engines. Coming from the Dart, it felt as if it was a snail. I asked for our Darts back. (The engineers at Barracuda Island) told us that they had something better in mind. The engineers at Barracuda Island didn't disappoint. It had the stealth of the Renegade and the power of the Dart."
Capt. Jamie Reese, fighter ace, 15 kills

The Maverick Fighter was designed to address some of the concerns many had for the Renegade, such as unit cost, sluggishness and a lack of maneuverability. Linda Weiss decided to employ a much larger engine for the aircraft, weighing 5% more than the Renegade's two engines, but putting out over 50% more power. As a result, the machine was able to reach speeds up to 1,200 mph in testing.

The aircraft was also provided with all-moving tail surfaces for both the rudder and elevators, giving the aircraft a greater degree of control. It was fitted with improved versions of the Renegade's electronics.

However, this performance came at a cost; the new engine was far more fuel-hungry, and drop tanks and aerial refuelling became the norm than the exception. Despite this, it was to go into production within a year.

Mass procurement of the fighter was planned, but the conclusion of the Third Olympian War meant that the Pilotmario Air Force had a large arsenal of Renegade fighters at hand, and it made no sense to discard these perfectly good fighters. They were now able to disband units still flying obsolete or dated types and equip the remainder with Renegades. In the end, these aircraft were issued to interceptor units, who felt that its speed and performance was worth it. The Maverick was also exported to other air forces, with success.
