The Hartford was a proof of concept testing new mechanical improvements never before seen in Smith aircraft. The addition of flaps and inward retracting landing gear had never been used before. The plane proved successful despite being underpowered. As a result, the company chose to produce a very limited series knowing that an improved version would soon be in the works.
