I have finally succeeded in fulfilling the dreams of all Indonesian citizens. In short, out of all the DC-10 GIA here, none of them wear the legendary Vas Diaz livery, we thought it was time to bring the legendary bird to you all. So...

GIA and its Majestic n Legendary Bird

During the second period of Wiweko Soepono's leadership, GIA (Garuda Indonesian Airways) again carried out modernization by bringing in new aircraft, this time from wide-body aircraft that could carry more passengers and for long-distance routes to Europe and Asia, in line with the trend of increasing passenger numbers.

DC-10 from series 30 with special registration PK-GIA was purchased to gradually replace the long body fleet DC-8-55. Tis's one of six(?) DC-10 of the airlines, it was given a name on its nose (nosename). PK-GIA was given the name "Irian Jaya", taken from the name of a large island in Indonesia. Orders continued to be placed so that in 1978 GIA owned a total of four units, namely PK-GIA “Irian Jaya”, PK-GIB “Bali”, PK-GIC “Java”, and PK-GID “Sumatra”. By 1980, the airline had 6 DC-10s and was designated to serve long-haul flights to Europe until the later arrival of the A300 and 747-200 to complement the service.

The glory days of the DC-10 ended when the airline decided to retire the remaining five aircrafts in 2005 (one was crashed in 1996). Today, only one of the aircraft is still stored at the GMF facility in Jakarta and the rest was scrapped.
