This mammoth of an aircraft was designed as a Long-range heavy bomber , the Barling Bomber was designed by Walter H. Barling, orignally part of the Royal Aircraft Factory and designed the very similar Tarrant Tabor which crashed, he was employed by the US government to create an aircraft to carry a bombload capable of destroying a Battleship, the contract to build the aircraft was given to Witteman-Lewis company in New Jersey, the aircraft had a huge cost and the aircraft firm was soon went out of bussiness after shiping the complete product to Wilbur Wright Field in Fairborn, Ohio, though the performance was underwhelming as with a full load it only had a 117 mile range in contrast with the Martin NBS-1 a short range bomber that had a 450 mile radius, the Barling main problem was the complex bracing and struts which caused a lot of drag and the 400hp engines could barely compensate, eventually after many more fialures it was taken apart and put into storage then Major Henry H. "Hap" arnold called for it's destrcution only on the second attempt when he didn't mention Barling it was granted and they burned the aircraft, even though the aircraft itself was a failure it still inspired many future american bombers like the B-17 and B-29, the only remaining piece of this aircraft is one of nose wheels which is on display Dayton Ohio
