In the 30-40s, when it was clear that it smelled like war, the As_ Design Bureau created a new aircraft, b-6, with a high flight range (9200 km), but another problem arose: how to provide escort with fighters? The answer is simple: carrier-based aircraft. In KB As, the development of a carrier-based fighter (As-4) soon began, but the navy had to get an aircraft carrier. The solution was the rebuilding of the second battleship of the Devastator type. The navy decided that the aircraft carrier was more valuable than the battleship and rebuilding began. The aircraft carrier received the hull and armor of the battleship, the speed of the cruiser, but not too spacious hangars. The name remains from its predecessor.
