    I think it's designed this way so as to confuse enemies. Reversed layout nevertheless give great advantages over pitch agity.

    Actually the reason why it was rear mounted is because it was an bomber killer so to speak and ina dogfight any Japanese fighter that took a hit once or twice would often burst into flames anyway since the fuel and engine is in the rear the pilots would be able to bail out without burning to death in the process plus it had agility as good as any basic fighter but was much faster than many other prop aircraft and had a lot more firepower because it had 4X30mm cannons @kaaraabiner

    I reckon its a pretty big design fail. If an enemy is coming behind you and shoots at you correctly, boom dead engine, but if you are in, say, a spitfire, it has to get through all that fuselage and that meat bag called a "pilot"
