Background History
The CA.M.36 (Caccia Modello 36, Fighter Type 36) was built and designed in 1938 after the Regia Marina Militare needed a new fighter to operate on Italian aircraft carriers.The requirements were:
•Turn fighter
•Lightweight
•Minimum 2 Active armament
•Folding wings
•Low stall and takeoff speed
The CA.M.36 (not the IV.M.36) wasn't compliant to the Lightweight requirement,as it was 140kg over the suggested requirement. Other designs weren't any better than the M.36,so the plane chosen was this.
Engine
The 36 was powered by a Water cooled Alfa Romeo FR.800 developing 1305 hp and propelling the plane up to 608 kph.
Armament
Since the 36 was supposed to protect Carriers or other ships from enemy planes,it was equipped with heavy caliber machine guns;
•1× 47mm Beretta CR 47 auto cannon
•4× 12.7mm Breda MPA 60
•2× 25kg DOI 25 antipersonnel bombs
