Designed in late 1968 as a replacement for the AD-1 Skyraider (and its variants), the AD-1P Wyvern was a faster, more agile, and more heavily armored aircraft. It was incredibly fast, reaching speeds over 450 miles per hour at sea level. It came standard with two drop-tanks, giving the plane exceptional range and the fuel necessary to linger in the combat zone. It also sported airbrakes, making it ideal for dive-bombing attacks as well as in other CAS operations. Many different weapons systems could be mounted on the hard-points, of which there were fourteen (seven per wing). Used in many conflicts since its introduction in 1971, the AD-1P was primarily used for stopping North Vietnamese convoys. The last AD-1P, nicknamed "Firecracker Joe", was retired from US service in 2014.
