USS Randolph CV-15
Note: This creation did not get a teaser, as it would’ve been slightly inappropriate for one important reason, read the description.
Hello everyone! Sorry for not posting in a while, slightly lost motivation for a bit. Anyway it’s a little bitter sweet, cause on the one hand, I give to you something new! But on the other hand, I am the bearer of bad news today. Well, here we go:
On December 23rd, 2020, my grandfather of 80 years passed away in his sleep. He was in hospice, where they set up a professional hospital bed in your own home, so that he could be with his wife when he passed. It’s what he wanted, and it’s all my grandmother could’ve wanted. This was, and always will be a very unfortunate moment in my family’s lives, he and my grandmother were the perfect example of what a marriage should be. They were loyal to each other, they rarely ever had any problems, they both had equal amounts of work in the house, and they never leeched off of each other. You may be wondering why I bring this up, so I shall say; My grandfather served in the Navy during WWII, he was a member of the USS Randolph’s crew. To commemorate his service, for putting his life in danger for the sake of the US, I made a replica of the aircraft carrier that he served on, the Randolph. Yeah I know, not really the best way to commemorate someone’s death, but at the time that I started building this, it felt appropriate, as it was before he passed. Do note, that this replica is not exactly 100% accurate, as there aren’t too many good photos of the USS Randolph, which made it hard to replicate, however I found out that the Randolph was an Essex-Class Aircraft Carrier, so I found blueprints of that type of carrier to base this off of. It’s still not exact, but it’s close enough for my standards. It’s also my first time building an aircraft carrier, so go easy on me lol. The Randolph is surprisingly fast actually, with a top speed of 38mph. It was exactly 888ft in length, and was one of the first aircraft carriers to feature the side platform with the arresting wire installed, for easier landings. The deck looks really bland IMO, there’s not that much to replicate on the deck and it just ended up being flat color, which doesn’t look all that pleasing, but I didn’t really have anything left to add at that point. The USS Randolph could accommodate 90-100 aircrafts, but on my replica here there’s only 12, the aircrafts on this carrier are F6F Hellcats. I actually made it so that they naturally sit on the carrier deck, rather than being physically attached to the deck itself. I did this for added realism, and occasional funny moments when SP physics goes haywire. The arrow things on the bow of the ship are completely unintentional, they are a result of the fuselage blocks’ geometry getting too wide and flat, resulting in the texture getting stretched to the point where it leaves a textureless space. However, for some weird reason this glitch ended up making arrow shapes on the bow, while normally I despise this glitch, I actually found it quite cool looking when it first happened, so I left it there because it looks cool. Obviously that wasn’t a feature on the actual USS Randolph, but then again this replica is far from accurate, so what would it have really mattered in the end?
Anyway, after that long tangent of things that probably only I care about, here’s the controls;
Throttle: Sail forward
Yaw: Turn left/right
Yeah not much in the functionality department, I really couldn’t add too much more due to part count, as the combined part count of the Randolph and the 12 F6F Hellcats is around 1,000, and there wasn’t all that much more that I felt was necessary to add. I recommend spawning it in as an AI, and trying to land on it, it’s indeed possible!
Here’s a screenshot gallery:
Anyway, have fun or something

Thanks everyone for the sympathy in the comments, it means so much more to me than you know.
@AWESOMENESS360 ok
@Tyrell I cannot, but thanks!
im sorry for your loss =( cool ship tho but can you make the planes flyable pls?
Aaww
The description is enough to make a grown man cry
@ThatOneThiccPlaneStealer that’s a nice way to think about it, and soon his wife will be there to join him. But that’s another day, and certainly not a day I hope for. But alas, a day that is inevitable, as with everyone.
@AWESOMENESS360 no I’m not sure
@MintLynx thanks, I actually showed him WIP shots of it while he was “still here” (he was on pain medications that dulled most if not all pain, but they simultaneously made him very loopy and hard to talk to, so luckily I was able to show him before he went through that.)
Building the ship your grandpa served on? Now that's a cool way to honor his memory. Sorry to hear you lost him, I'm sure he'd be thrilled to hear you built his ship on here!
@Yeeturmom oh wow, that’s pretty cool actually. Do you know what carrier specifically he served on?
I’m so sorry about your grandpa.
Good job, I like it.
@KnightOfRen well if a t-6 was on the carrier it wouldn't make sence, so technically that comment has no real validity.
@russianspy but that's not including the hellcats, they aren't attached to the ship, if you look in the description it says it's near 1000 with the planes.
Sorry for your grandpa
And amazing carrier btw
Really sorry about your Grandpa btw, that must be hard to deal with :'(
Great build!
You have shown your allegience to the F6F Hellcat gang in a time of war against @PapaKernels's T-6 Texan clan
ITS 300 PARTS @PapaKernels
I attempted to spawn this beast in, 4fps.........I think I'm going to get rid of the planes.
Looks beautiful!! For a first carrier its amazing! Makes me what to attempt another carrier.
.
Sorry for your loss, hope you and your family is doing well.
I'm very sorry for your loss, I give you my condolences. My Grandfather also passed away at the age of 77 in April of 2020, he was the best that I had, he comforted me when i had difficulties, he supported me always. Even then, I can't move on, I'm still depressed up to this day.
I’m sorry for your loss. My grandfather who passed in 2015, served on a Ticonderoga class.
I was going to give some constructive criticism, but that isn’t needed, great build and an awesome way to celebrate the life of your grandpa. Anyway, I am sorry for your loss. Godspeed.
I’m so sorry about your grandpa
