F4D Skyray

21.0k LieutenantSOT  4.0 years ago

This beautiful plane was in service with the United States Navy from 1956 - 1964. Though it was short, in this period it made breakthroughs. Capable of landing and taking off from carriers, had a built in radar that took up the nose area, and it also had folding wings. It could reach speeds of up to 600 mph at sea level, and an absolute maximum speed of 740 mph at a high altitude.
This plane was designed in late WW2 when the US wanted a plane that could quickly take off and take out an enemy plane that was at 50,000 feet. This plane was the fastest carrier-based plane in the world at it's time, and had the highest climbing speed.

Performance:

At take off, pull up and it takes off fine, just keep pulling up so that the nose does not dip. There are working folding wings, and an arresting cable as well. Can fly at the speed of the real one, and has realistic maneuverability. Just don't fold the wings during flight, obviously.

Weapons:

  • 4 Colt Mk.12 Cannons (20mm autocannons; I coded them and made them almost exactly realistic)
  • 2 AIM-9 Sidewinders (big thanks to @mikoyanster for them)
  • 2 rocket pods
  • 1 2,000 pound bomb

I mixed a few of the common loadouts on to the plane to allow it to be multirole, I hope you are okay with that.

Common loadouts:

  • 4 Sidewinders and 2 19-rockets pods
  • 1 2000 pound bomb and 4 7-rockets pods

The weird tanks at the bottom are fuel tanks, but they do not have detachers. Sorry

Controls:

  • Standard plane control (But no trim)
  • AG1 = Activates the rotators for the wings, VTOL up folds them
  • AG2 = Carrier landing lights and arresting cable (I landed on the carrier, so it works)
  • AG8 = Lights (the red and green ones)
  • Brake = airbrakes

I hope you enjoy!!!

PS: I think this is the best looking plane, and the most realistic, I have ever made :O

Also, it may go a tad bit faster than I thought it would at 25,000 feet...

@mikoyanster thank you for the Sidewinders! I'm sorry I didn't ask for your permission, but I used it on this plane

PS: this plane ended up being almost exactly 1:1.15 ratio. It's not an exact replica, but it is still very realistic

Nice jet , difficult to reproduce because of the shape of these very special wings .
    Good job .

I used the base cockpit because it actually has a striking resemblance to the real one
