P-700 Granite anti-ship missile is a heavy-duty long-range supersonic anti-ship missile designed and developed by the Special Machinery Design Bureau of the former Soviet Union. At first, the P-700 was developed as a supporting weapon for the 949 cruise missile nuclear submarine, but it was later equipped by the 1144 heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser and the 1143.5/6/7 carrier cruiser/aircraft carrier. Because the former Soviet Union/Russia kept the data of the P-700 system highly confidential, it was not until the sinking of the Kursk nuclear submarine in 2000 that the West learned the true face of this "carrier killer".
