"Put into production in 1954, the Longsword is an adaptation of the F-2 airframe to use the recently developed missile technology. The nose was modified to accomodate a radome, which added search and rangefinding capabilities to the F-3. In addition to to carrying IR homing missiles, the newer F-3 brought improvements in operational range and handling characteristics, although the powerplant remained the same as the old F-2 and the wing guns had to be removed."
