A Greman spy, Hans Zäinemann, who was also a double agent, left the Sukhoi Su-5 drawings into the hands of the American research team in the Summer of 1941, leading to the development of Su-5B Sokol (Eagle in Russian). This airplane got a stretched and more streamlined fuselage, with the powerful Allison's V-1710 engines producing 1,040 hp (780 kW) with a better rate of climb.

Due to the surplus P-51s, there were only 390 examples built, and a few of them were transferred to the Imperial Iranian Air Force (IIAF) in the early 1950s. A few of the survive the 1979 Islamic revolution, Iran-Iraq war, and these aircrafts were turned into UAVs in late 2000 and still in service after 70 years. Any other examples were not exist outside Iran.
