Mixed-Propulsion Aircraft Challenge! [CLOSED]

20.9k LieutenantSOT  3.7 years ago

Alrighty, lads...

So, first, lets do a background on this topic.

There was a period from 1943 to about 1947 (or 1950) where aircraft designers knew that jet engines were unreliable and slow to throttle response, and that propellers were powerful and easy to control, but slow. So, why not mix the two together???
And then there was also the idea of rocket-powered jet-assisted aircraft that were powered by rockets, but had JATO or RATO, or even sometimes they were powered by something like a coal-based Ramjet.
Personally, I LOVE these types of planes, and I want to see what you, the community, could create. Let it be an unbuilt design, a replica, or even a fictitious build. The only exception to this is that no hybrid-electric aircraft or ramjet-pulsejet spacecraft. Only mixed-propulsion propjets or rocket-jets.
One more thing: motorjets, such as the MiG I-250 (13), are allowed only if the engine ALSO drives a propeller. Yes, motorjets are only one engine, but it powers two types of propulsion and is therefore allowed.

Now... the rules.

RULESSSS PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AT LEAST READ THIS:

  • Mixed-Propulsion Propjets and Rocket-jets are all that are allowed (exceptions apply, ask in the comments if you have a concern :)). However, you can have something like a RATO Propjet superbomber or something. And.... I will allow something like the X-6 Crusader that has a nuclear reactor and conventional fuel.
  • 100 parts minimum ; 850 parts maximum
  • Should date somewhere between 1943 and 1960. BUT if you want to make something like a RATO propeller-driven fictional biplane... sure, I guess. Let your imagination roam free
  • Shouldn't break the sound barrier, but it depends on what you are doing. (rocket jets could break the sound barrier, but propellers usually slow a plane down at high speeds)
  • Can be replica, fictional, or blueprint replicas. But I'd prefer replicas becasue they are cool and not loved XD
  • As they had no point in civilian life, they should have weapons and be military-based. However, if you have something like the passenger version of the B-36D it will be allowed. As long as it has mixed propulsion.

For the record, yes. I am completely obsessed with Propjets and Mixed Propulsion... but all I can say is bite me. You have to admit they are pretty cool.

Inspiration:

Convair B-36D Peacemaker
By far, my favorite plane right now. Such a beauty. I really hope to get one airborne one day.

Convair XP-81
Other than the plane below this, this plane was also one of the first ones I saw and learned about. If you read my forum post, this plane is unique because it has a turboprop AND a turbojet. Not very common in the '40s.

MiG I-250 (13)
Fun fact, this plane was the one that got me into Mixed Propulsion aircraft. I just recently learned what a motorjet was too.

Curtiss XF15C-1 Stingray

Ryan FR Fireball

NF-104A (Jet/Rocket)

Vickers Type 559

Bréguet 960 Vultur

Ryan XF2R Dark Shark

If anyone has any questions, or cool blueprints, I would LOVE to have them. I prefer propjets, but I'm cool with anything.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments!

Deadline: April 2nd

Grading scale:

x/10 - Looks?
x/10 - Realistic? (try to make the jets have a slow start up. The Blasto J90 is good for this, just scale 'er down)
x/10 - Functional?
x/5 - Description?
x/5 - Personal Opinion? (I'm not picky at all... but I still have a passion for these, so I want it to be fun, cool-looking, and bada**)

x/40 - Total

    Oh, yeah, baby. Another challenge.

Just fyi, as cool as it is to see y'all's posts, I will likely stop doing challenges for a while after this. But I think this challenge is something I actually have a passion for. I LOVE mixed propulsion if you haven't gotten that yet.

Also, I will be posting a mixed-propulsion dive bomber for another challenge soon. See y'all later!

Hello! I would like to join this challenge, does it have to a replica of a real life craft, or could it be fiction? @LieutenantSOT

Yo, I have a new concept in development! I'd gladly join, but I don't know if I can finish my aircraft before it's too late 😔

@LieutenantSOT Oh ok so yeah the F-88 is the only one lol

    @asteroidbook345 huh. Fair enough.
Yeah, the XF-88B was the first (and only) prop and jet aircraft that could break the sound barrier. And the Thunderscreech had drastically lower performance than expected, only reaching 500 mph instead of the 613 mph

What's funny about the no supersonic props thing is that the XF-88 Voodoo and XF-84F Thunderscreech were both fitted with turboprops to evaluate the potential for supersonic propellers.

The first prototype of mine is in the air. If your looking for a dog fighter your gonna be sorely dissapointed!!! Think if a thunderscreach and an Me262 had a baby. Kinda looks like what mine is.

@asteroidbook345 I honestly didn't notice that it was mixed-propulsion. When I first looked it up it looked like it said it just had the radials. Thanks for the confirmation XD. That was my bad
